29 Jan Kamala Harris Calls for “Assault Weapons” Ban in CNN Town Hall
California Senator and freshly declared 2020 Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris called for a new “assault weapons” ban in a town hall event hosted by CNN today in Des Moines, Iowa with Jake Tapper.
Kamala contradictorily stated that one can “be for the Second Amendment” while claiming that “there was no reason in a civil society that we have assault weapons around communities that can kill babies and police officers.”
Any firearm can be used for malicious purposes such as killing babies or police officers, making Harris’ argument for gun control applicable to any firearm in civilian circulation in the United States.
Contrary to assertions from gun control supporters, “assault weapon” is a term that is purely a creation of political forces. It first entered wide circulation as a result of President Bill Clinton’s Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. The term is distinct from the legitimate category of firearms known as “assault rifles,” a term used by gunsmiths, militaries worldwide, and others, to describe commonly owned firearms such as AR-15- pattern rifles.
Despite Harris singling out very commonly owned firearms as worth banning, guns such as AR-15 style-rifles are rarely used in violent crime generally. Research into their use in America suggests that assault rifles are used in less than 7% of violent crimes, with many estimates suggesting a figure of approximately 2%.
In the town hall, Harris also went on to call for an amnesty that would include not only recipients of DACA, but also their “parents,” possibly suggesting she would seek to grant amnesty to the broader population of more than 12 million people living in the United States illegally if elected President.
